As a visual artist, Matěj Frank (* 1989, CZ) develops several autonomous creative practices. He works with sculpture, spatial installation, sound art and conceptual drawing. He is interested in slow events, the impermanent and ephemeral everyday. He explores space, entering it with gesture or sound. He captures time through processual drawings and performances. His measure is the human body, the actual, living, and the figurative, artificial. For him, chance is important; he improvises and experiments based on fixed premises. Matěj Frank looks for relationships between fullness and emptiness, transience, and permanence; he is interested in intersections and layers, while trying to maintain simplicity of form and process. He creates situations, models meeting places, participates – for example with Jasmin Schaitl and Jakub Frank.
Matěj Frank also works as a curator and dramaturge, among others within the Opava-based contemporary art association Bludný kámen [The Wandering Stone]. From 2016 to 2022, he taught in the Department of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. He regularly participates in international projects (Scuplture Quadrennial Riga, 2021-2024; MoKS Mooste, 2019; ART BnB HaMiffal, 2017 etc.) and exhibitions (Galerie Dole, Ostrava, 2023; 8smička, Humpolec, 2022; Contemporary Museum Wrocław, 2020; QL-galerie, Graz, 2018 etc.), his works have been awarded at international competitions, and he has received scholarships from (among others) the Czech Ministry of Culture (2019-2021) and the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (2018).
He believes in human responsibility and mutual respect.
